September Screenings

September is a big month! First, there was the gallery show August-September at Hampden-Sydney College, which just came down. I’ll be the artist-in-residence there in October, and students got their first look at my work. I’ll be leading workshops this fall, working underwater at a lush pond on campus, bringing along several underwater cameras for the students to use.

I’ve got to say, when I look at the rest of the schedule, that I wish I were going to all of them instead of none of them! I have a busy non-profit job, which in September involves building and decorating wooden boats, launching a fundraiser, leading school tours, and attending a week-long conference in St. Louis. All worthwhile, but my films are traveling without me. And they are going to some great places!

Here is the rest of the schedule:

Vox Popular Media Arts Festival in Thunder Bay, Canada, September 12, “Immersion/Inversion” This festival has a wonderful selection of experimental films, as well as workshops I’d love to attend.

VASTLAB Experimental Film Festival in Los Angeles, September 20 and 21, “Immersion/Inversion” I have friends going to this one for me. I want to hear all about it!

Equinox Mountain Environmental Film Festival, Manchester, Vermont, September 21 and 22, “In the River’s Flow” This is a carefully curated festival about the environment and environmental filmmaking that is a partnership between Ninth Wave Global and Levity Mountain.

Mykonos Biennale, Mykonos, Greece, September 25, “Rivanna River Diaries: The School,” and “In the River’s Flow” I entered this festival’s category “Video Graffiti,” which promised outdoor projections in unusual places. I imagined my videos of fish and floating objects projected on the white exterior walls of the architecture of Mykonos, bouncing off narrow footpaths in the night. I’ve been to that island, and others, though it’s been a very, very long time. And I would love to go back, particularly to see an outdoor projection of my work. I will be along the Missouri, not the Mediterranean… I’m looking forward to some photos…
